The Summer Scout also has a T-19 manual transmission and a tow hitch to tow my 1971 19&#8242; Fiberform boat. To lauch a boat it is helpful to have a working emergency brake so that you don&#8217;t end up in the river. My <a href=\"http:\/\/scoutparts.com\/products\/?view=product&amp;product_id=13951\">rear brake cable<\/a>\u00a0broke a number of years ago, so it is finally time to replace it. The first step\u00a0in brake cable replacement is\u00a0to remove the rear wheels, and disassemble the rear shoe assembly. <a rel=\"attachment wp-att-249\" href=\"http:\/\/scoutparts.com\/blog\/scout-ii-rear-emergency-brake-cable-replacement\/248\/jeremiah\/top-springs\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-249\" src=\"http:\/\/scoutparts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/Top-springs-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"Scout II rear brake shoes\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scoutparts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/Top-springs-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/scoutparts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/Top-springs.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>If you have a standard Scout II\u00a0 you will need a <a href=\"http:\/\/scoutparts.com\/products\/?view=product&amp;product_id=12569\">shorter cable<\/a> than the one that I used. There are probably some skilled mechanics who can thread one of these cables without removing the shoes, but I had a rusty old cable stuck to the backing plate and it seemed easier to make some space. Once the shoes were removed, the old cable was exposed. There is a <a href=\"http:\/\/scoutparts.com\/products\/?view=product&amp;product_id=13643\">brake cable tool <\/a>that will compress the backing plate catching fitting to allow for the cable to be removed from the plate. Make sure that you thread the cable OVER your leaf spring on the way to the cable routing guides. The first time that I installed one of these cables I had to do some rework because I screwed this part up.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_251\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-251\" href=\"http:\/\/scoutparts.com\/blog\/scout-ii-rear-emergency-brake-cable-replacement\/248\/jeremiah\/cable-routing\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-251\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-251\" src=\"http:\/\/scoutparts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/Cable-Routing-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"scout ii brake cable routing\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-251\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Route the cable over the leaf spring and through the cable router<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The last step is to adjust the cable at the adjusting nut where the rear cable is connected to the front cable. I found that my old cable had stretched a bit and had to be adjusted down the stud on the front cable to keep the rear wheels turning.
